WORD FROM
ADE
The
Hackney Empire, the theatre, the staff, the community and the volunteers.
Not necessarily in that order though.
I first met the theatre director
Roland Muldoon one lazy afternoon at a barbecue at a plantation in Jamaica,
New Year 1994. We chatted and discovered we had mutual friends, some actually
on the island. We than arranged to meet back in London.
I have been a frequent visitor
to the Hackney Empire to watch various productions ranging from talent
contest, stand up comedy to opera, wow, what a theatre.
The Hackney Empire has a
brilliant warm ambiance that flows throughout the building. It is extremely
intimate, cosy and can be described as innocent. Any excuse to visit this
building is recommended.
Not only does the theatre serve the community
well, but it also encourages the surrounding area’s inhabitants who I
might add, harbour a wealth of artistic flair and talent, to explore these
avenues.
A
note for you all to consider Griff Rhys Jones should have been honoured on Her
Majesty’s Queen Elizabeth Golden jubilee honours list. He opens up his
lovely home to all sorts of reprobates, ladies of the night and Don Corleneo’s,
all in the name of the Hackney Empire Appeal.
I think that he is a great
chairman of the appeal and should be honoured (not only because of the
last gathering we had at his wonderful house, we caught someone leaving
with his television, people put cigarettes out on his Persian rugs, and
the toilet was flooded where male and female visitors failed to hit the
toilet bowl) well done Griff!
As this is the World Wide
Web, I ask all artists who are considering to put on a performance in the
London area to consider the Empire as a possible venue especially the R
'n' B American acts, the rock acts for their secret gigs. Well, I won’t
babble on since you all get the picture.
I'm not one for red tape
and there is no such word as "can't" in my vocabulary, so please help the
Appeal in anyway that you see fit.
2004 - The appeal is still ongoing. Keep checking for updates.
